Ensuring Access to Clean and Reliable Water for Arunachal Pradesh
Public Health Engineering & Water Supply Department – Itanagar & Naharlagun Divisions
Public Health Engineering & Water Supply Department was created in 1995. The department has a Commissioner/Secretary as an administrative head and is functioning under 5 Chief Engineers (Western Zone, Eastern Zone, Central Zone, Design & Planning and Sanitaion), 7 circles headed by Superintending Engineers, 37 divisions headed by Executive Engineer (35 Civil Divisions and 2 Mechanical Divisions) and 74 Sub-Divisions headed by Assistant Engineer.
The PHE&WS Division Itanagar & Naharlagun have three Sub-divisions covers the jurisdiction of entire Itanagar Capital Region including Sangdupota circle. As per business allocation entrusted to PHE&WS Department, the divisions have carried out.
Rural Areas (under JJM & SBM):
Urban Areas:
- 100% tap water coverage to 7,690 households
- Coverage spans 204 habitations across 90 villages
- 107 drinking water schemes implemented
- 4,697 Individual Household Latrines (IHHLs)
- 20 Community Sanitary Complexes (CSCs)
Urban Areas:
- Tap water connections extended to 5,419 domestic consumers across 20 wards
- Additional connections include 238 institutions, 481 bungalows/quarters, and 209 commercial units
- Total water availability: 35.9 MLD (Itanagar – 25 MLD, Naharlagun – 10.9 MLD).
Programme
Jal Jeevan Mission
Every rural household should have drinking water supply in adequate quantity of prescribed quality on regular and long-term basis at affordable service delivery charges leading to improvement in living standards of rural communities.
Swachh Bharat Mission
Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) was launched on 2nd October'2014 by the Hon'b1e Prime Minister with an aim to achieve the Open Defection Free (ODF) status of the nation by 2nd October'2019, as a fitting tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.
Har Ghar Jal
Since August 2019, Government of India, in partnership with States, is implementing Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) – Har Ghar Jal to make provision of tap water supply to every rural household by 2024.
